In the past five years, there has been a 300% jump in cosmetic dentistry says members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.  Procedures such as Lumineers, Invisalign®, and the very popular one hour in-office whitening procedure called Zoom®, have all made an unattractive smile a thing of the past.

How important is an attractive smile?

Well, 9 out of 10 men and women, agree that an attractive smile is an important social asset. Nearly as many men as women, 86% vs. 89%, say they always remember someone with an especially attractive smile.  And about 75% of adults agree that an unattractive smile can hurt someone’s chances for a successful career.  More than 8 out of 10 patients agree that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to people of the opposite sex.

How to Find a Dentist (Cosmetic Dentist, Family Dentist, etc.)

1)  The absolute best way to find a dentist is by asking a friend, family, or coworker who they go to, what their experience was like, etc…

2)  Even though you may have dental insurance and want to pick from someone in your provider network, #1 above still applies.  Just don’t pick anyone.  Check out their website… ask questions!

3)  If you must find a dentist in the Yellow Pages or other ad, please keep the following in mind:

• Not all dentists who advertise are bad dentists or good dentists… so you shouldn’t really assume too much from the ad, the size of the ad, etc…
• There are bad dentists out there, just like there are bad doctors, bad lawyers, bad contractors, etc… BUT the majority of the dentists in Tulsa (and we are personally familiar with over 200 of them) are good dentists.  If you really want to do your research, one source could be logging on to the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry website:  http://www.dentist.state.ok.us/lists/ddsl.htm.

With a lot of hype over dental lasers, it seems that several patients are going for the laser instead of the knife.

Dr. David Wong, from Tulsa, posted this photo showing what can happen when laser surgery backfires.

Says Dr. Wong, “This patient underwent a laser frenectomy procedure to remove the muscle between the 2 lower front teeth. Not only was the procedure unsuccessful, this patient was left with severe gum recession and pain. After nearly a year, this patient’s condition has not improved to her satisfaction. Before doing ANY type of laser periodontal surgery, patients should get the facts.”
